6. 경단 (Gyeongdan) (Rice Cake Balls)

경단은 찹쌀가루를 반죽해 작고 동그랗게 빚어 삶은 후, 팥가루, 콩가루, 깨가루, 녹차가루 등 다양한 가루에 굴려 마무리하는 떡입니다.

모양은 한 입에 쏙 들어가는 동그란 형태로 귀엽고 먹기 편해 어린이 간식이나 손님 접대용으로도 좋습니다. 다양한 색으로 만들 수 있어 색감이 예쁘고 화려한 떡상에 자주 사용돼요.

경단은 속을 넣기도 하고, 넣지 않기도 합니다. 겉의 가루에 따라 맛이 달라지며, 만드는 방식도 간단해 가정에서도 쉽게 만들 수 있는 떡 중 하나로 알려져 있습니다.

 

Description:
Gyeongdan are small, ball-shaped rice cakes made from glutinous rice dough, boiled, and then rolled in colorful powders like red bean, soybean flour, or sesame.

They are visually appealing, bite-sized, and perfect for festive occasions or as a tea snack. Some varieties have fillings, while others are plain. Gyeongdan is also popular for children’s parties and easy to make at home.

 

Ingredients (2 servings):

  • 1 cup glutinous rice flour
  • ½ cup water
  • Powder coatings (red bean, sesame, soybean)
  • Pinch of salt

Steps:

  1. Mix rice flour with a pinch of salt and water to form dough.
  2. Knead until smooth and non-sticky.
  3. Roll into 12–14 small balls (about 2–3 cm).
  4. Boil water in a pot and add balls.
  5. Cook until they float (~3–5 min).
  6. Remove and rinse in cold water to prevent sticking.
  7. Drain well on a towel.
  8. Roll each ball in desired coatings.
  9. Optional: add a tiny filling before shaping.
  10. Serve on a platter.
