📖 The Rock of the Waiting Wife

(망부석)

옛날 옛적에 서로 깊이 사랑하는 부부가 살고 있었어요.

Long ago, there lived a husband and wife who loved each other deeply.

남편은 곧 나라의 명을 받아 먼 길을 떠나게 되었어요.
[Nam-pyeon-eun] [got] [na-ra-ui] [myeong-eul] [bad-a] [meon] [gil-eul] [tteo-na-ge] [doe-eo-sseo-yo].
One day, the husband received a royal command and had to leave on a long journey.

아내는 눈물을 흘리며 “꼭 돌아오세요.” 하고 말했어요.

With tears in her eyes, the wife said, “Please come back safely.”

남편은 손을 꼭 잡으며 “반드시 돌아올게요.” 라고 약속했어요.

Holding her hand tightly, the husband promised, “I will surely return.”

그렇게 남편은 떠나고, 아내는 마을 언덕 위에서 매일 남편을 기다렸어요.

After he left, the wife waited every day on a hill in the village, watching for his return.

비가 오나 눈이 오나, 바람이 부나 언제나 그 자리에 있었어요.

Whether it rained, snowed, or the wind blew, she was always there.

세월은 흘러 머리가 희어지고 옷은 낡아졌지만, 그녀는 기다렸어요.

Years passed, her hair turned white and her clothes wore thin, but she kept waiting.

어느 날, 아내는 오랜 기다림 끝에 그 자리에서 조용히 숨을 거두었어요.

Strangely, a rock shaped like a person appeared where she had stood.

사람들은 그 바위를 ‘망부석’이라고 부르게 되었어요.

People began calling the rock ‘Mangbuseok’—the Rock of the Waiting Wife.

그 뒤로 망부석은 변함없는 사랑과 기다림의 상징이 되었어요.
[Geu] [dwi-ro] [Mang-bu-seok-eun] [byeon-ham-eom-neun] [sa-rang-gwa] [gi-da-rim-ui] [sang-jing-i] [doe-eo-sseo-yo].
Since then, the Mangbuseok became a symbol of unwavering love and devotion.
