📖 The Story of the Twelve Zodiac Animals

(열두 띠 이야기)

옛날 옛적에 하늘의 옥황상제가 동물들에게 큰 소식을 전했어요.

Long ago, the Jade Emperor of the heavens made a grand announcement to the animals.

“앞으로 인간들의 해를 정하기 위해 열두 동물을 선택할 것이다,” 라고 했어요.
“[Ap-eu-ro] [in-gan-deul-ui] [hae-reul] [jeong-ha-gi] [wi-hae] [yeol-du] [dong-mul-eul] [seon-taek-hal] [geo-si-da],” [ra-go] [hae-sseo-yo].
“To determine the years of humans, I will select twelve animals,” he said.

“먼저 도착한 순서대로 해의 이름을 주겠다.” 라고 덧붙였어요.
“[Meon-jeo] [do-chak-han] [soon-seo-dae-ro] [hae-ui] [i-reum-eul] [ju-get-da].” [ra-go] [deut-but-yeo-sseo-yo].
“Those who arrive first will have a year named after them,” he added.

이 말을 들은 동물들은 모두 들뜬 마음으로 경주를 준비했어요.

All the animals, excited by the news, began to prepare for the great race.

쥐는 발이 느려 걱정했지만 꾀를 낼 생각을 했어요.

The rat was worried about being slow, but came up with a clever idea.

쥐는 소에게 다가가 “등에 태워 주세요,” 라고 부탁했어요.
[Jwi-neun] [so-e-ge] [da-ga-ga] “[Deung-e] [tae-wo] [ju-se-yo],” [ra-go] [bu-tak-hae-sseo-yo].
The rat approached the ox and asked, “Can I ride on your back?”

소는 마음씨가 착해서 흔쾌히 쥐를 등에 태웠어요.
[So-neun] [ma-eum-ssi-ga] [chak-hae-seo] [heun-kwae-hi] [jwi-reul] [deung-e] [tae-wo-sseo-yo].
The kind ox gladly allowed the rat to ride on his back.

다음 날 아침, 모든 동물들이 강을 건너기 위해 출발했어요.

The next morning, all the animals set off to cross the river.

소는 느리지만 힘이 세서 꾸준히 앞으로 나아갔어요.
[So-neun] [neu-ri-ji-man] [him-i] [sae-seo] [kku-ju-ni] [ap-eu-ro] [na-a-gat-seo-yo].
Though slow, the ox was strong and moved steadily forward.

소가 거의 도착하자 쥐는 갑자기 뛰어내려 1등으로 들어갔어요.
[So-ga] [geo-ui] [do-chak-ha-ja] [jwi-neun] [gap-ja-gi] [ttwi-eo-nae-ryeo] [il-deung-eu-ro] [deu-reo-ga-sseo-yo].
As the ox neared the finish, the rat jumped off and came in first.

그렇게 쥐는 첫 번째 동물로 뽑히게 되었고, 소는 두 번째가 되었어요.

Thus, the rat became the first animal, and the ox came second.

뒤이어 호랑이, 토끼, 용, 뱀, 말, 양, 원숭이, 닭, 개가 도착했어요.
[Dwi-i-eo] [ho-rang-i], [to-kki], [yong], [baem], [mal], [yang], [won-soong-i], [dak], [gae-ga] [do-chak-hae-sseo-yo].
Then came the tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, and dog.

마지막으로 돼지가 천천히 도착해 열두 번째가 되었어요.
[Ma-ji-mak-eu-ro] [dwae-ji-ga] [cheon-cheon-hi] [do-chak-hae] [yeol-du] [beon-jjae-ga] [doe-eo-sseo-yo].
Finally, the pig arrived slowly and became the twelfth.

이렇게 해서 열두 띠가 정해졌고, 지금까지 이어지고 있어요.
[I-reo-ke] [hae-seo] [yeol-du] [tti-ga] [jeong-hae-jyeot-go], [ji-geum-kka-ji] [i-eo-ji-go] [i-sseo-yo].
And so the twelve zodiac animals were chosen, and the system continues to this day.
