📖 The Porter and the Tiger

(지게꾼과 호랑이)

옛날 옛적에 산길을 따라 짐을 나르는 지게꾼이 있었어요.

Long ago, there was a porter who carried loads along a mountain path.

지게꾼은 무거운 짐을 지고 땀을 뻘뻘 흘리며 길을 걷고 있었어요.
[Ji-ge-kkun-eun] [mu-geo-un] [jim-eul] [ji-go] [ttam-eul] [ppeol-ppeol] [heul-li-myeo] [gil-eul] [geot-go] [i-sseo-sseo-yo].
The porter walked down the path sweating heavily under the weight of his load.

그런데 갑자기 길 한복판에 무서운 호랑이가 나타났어요.

Suddenly, a fierce tiger appeared in the middle of the road.

호랑이는 지게꾼을 노려보며 으르렁거렸어요.

The tiger glared at the porter and growled threateningly.

지게꾼은 놀라고 무서웠지만, 침착하게 생각했어요.

The porter was frightened but stayed calm and thought quickly.

“호랑이님, 저를 잡아먹기 전에 제 이야기나 들어보시겠어요?”
“[Ho-rang-i-nim], [jeo-reul] [ja-ba-meok-gi] [jeon-e] [je] [i-ya-gi-na] [deu-reo-bo-shi-ge-sseo-yo]?”
“Dear Tiger, before you eat me, would you listen to my story?”

호랑이는 지게꾼의 당당한 태도에 호기심이 생겼어요.
[Ho-rang-i-neun] [ji-ge-kkun-ui] [dang-dang-han] [tae-do-e] [ho-gi-sim-i] [saeng-gye-o-sseo-yo].
The tiger became curious about the porter’s confident attitude.

“그래, 어디 한번 말해 보아라.” 하고 호랑이가 말했어요.
“[Geu-rae], [eo-di] [han-beon] [mal-hae] [bo-a-ra],” [ha-go] [ho-rang-i-ga] [mal-hae-sseo-yo].
“Alright, let’s hear it,” said the tiger.

지게꾼은 무거운 짐을 벗어놓고 천천히 말을 시작했어요.
[Ji-ge-kkun-eun] [mu-geo-un] [jim-eul] [beo-seo-noh-go] [cheon-cheon-hi] [mal-eul] [si-jak-hae-sseo-yo].
The porter put down his load and began to speak slowly.

“사실 저는 보통 사람이 아니라 특별한 힘을 가진 사람입니다,” 라고 했어요.
“[Sa-sil] [jeo-neun] [bo-tong] [sa-ram-i] [a-ni-ra] [teuk-byeol-han] [him-eul] [ga-jin] [sa-ram-im-ni-da],” [ra-go] [hae-sseo-yo].
“Actually, I’m not just an ordinary man—I have special powers,” he said.

호랑이는 눈을 동그랗게 뜨고 말을 계속 듣기 시작했어요.
[Ho-rang-i-neun] [nun-eul] [dong-geu-rat-ge] [tteu-go] [mal-eul] [gye-sok] [deut-gi] [si-ja-kae-sseo-yo].
The tiger opened his eyes wide and kept listening.

지게꾼은 자신이 산신령의 아들이며, 악한 동물을 벌하러 왔다고 했어요.
[Ji-ge-kkun-eun] [ja-sin-i] [san-sin-ryeong-ui] [a-deu-ri-myeo], [ak-han] [dong-mul-eul] [beol-ha-ro] [wat-da-go] [hae-sseo-yo].
The porter claimed he was the son of a mountain spirit sent to punish evil animals.

호랑이는 겁이 나서 뒷걸음질을 치기 시작했어요.
[Ho-rang-i-neun] [geop-i] [na-seo] [dwit-geo-reum-jil-eul] [chi-gi] [si-jak-hae-sseo-yo].
The tiger got scared and started backing away.

“죄송합니다! 몰라 뵈었습니다!” 하고 호랑이는 도망쳤어요.
“[Joe-song-ham-ni-da]! [Mol-la-bwae-sseum-ni-da]!” [ha-go] [ho-rang-i-neun] [do-mang-chyeo-sseo-yo].
“I’m sorry! I didn’t recognize you!” cried the tiger as he ran away.

지게꾼은 안도의 한숨을 쉬며 다시 길을 걸었어요.
[Ji-ge-kkun-eun] [an-do-ui] [han-sum-eul] [swi-myeo] [da-si] [gil-eul] [geo-reo-sseo-yo].
The porter sighed in relief and continued on his way.
