📖 Dallae and Sooni
(달래와 순이)
옛날 옛적에 가난하지만 사이좋은 자매, 달래와 순이가 살고 있었어요.

Long ago, there lived two sisters, Dallae and Sooni, who were poor but very
close.
두 자매는 부모님 없이 서로를 의지하며 살아가고 있었어요.

They lived without parents, depending on each other for everything.

As the older sister, Dallae took care of Sooni and went to the mountains
daily to gather firewood.
순이는 집을 지키며 물을 길러 오고 밥을 지었어요.

Sooni stayed home, fetched water, and cooked meals.
어느 날, 달래가 나무를 하다 길을 잃고 돌아오지 않았어요.

One day, Dallae got lost while gathering firewood and didn’t return.
순이는 언니를 찾아 산으로 올라가 소리쳤어요.

Sooni climbed the mountain calling out for her sister.
“달래언니! 어디 있어?” 하고 눈물을 흘렸어요.
“[Dal-lae] [Eon-ni]! [eo-di] [i-sseo]?” [ha-go] [nun-mul-eul] [heul-lyeo-sseo-yo].
“Dallae! Sister, where are you?” she cried in tears.
그때 하늘에서 빛이 내려오며 달래의 목소리가 들렸어요.
[Geu-ttae] [han-eul-e-seo] [bi-chi] [nae-ryeo-om-yeo] [Dal-lae-ui] [mok-so-ri-ga] [deul-lyeo-sseo-yo-.
Then a light shone down from the sky, and she heard Dallae’s voice.
“순아, 나는 이제 하늘에서
너를 지켜볼 거야,” 라고 했어요.
“Soona, naneun ije haneul-eseo neoreul jikyeobol geoya,” rago haesseoyo.
“Sooni, I will now watch over you from the sky,” said the voice.
순이는 언니가 별이 되어 자신을 지켜준다고 믿게 되었어요.
[Soo-ni-neun] [eon-ni-ga] [byeol-i] [doe-eo] [ja-sin-eul] [ji-kyeo-jun-da-go] [mid-ge] [doe-eo-sseo-yo].
Sooni came to believe that her sister had become a star watching over her.
그날 밤부터 순이는 매일 하늘을 보며 별에게 말을 걸었어요.

From that night on, Sooni looked up at the sky each night and spoke to the
star.

지냈어. 고마워.” 하고 조용히 웃었어요.

“Sister, I did well today. Thank you,” she said with a soft smile.
마을 사람들은 별이 가장 밝게 빛나는 곳에서 순이를 발견하곤 했어요.

Villagers often found Sooni where the stars shone the brightest.
세월이 흘러 순이도 나이가 들어 별이 되었다고 해요.

As time passed, Sooni too grew old and became a star, they say.

Even now, the two sisters’ stars shine side by side in the night sky.
