📖 The
King's Donkey Ears
[Yet-nal] [yet-jeo-ge] [han] [na-ra-e] [jal-saen-ggi-go] [ji-he-roun] [im-geum-nim-i] [sal-go] [i-sseo-sseo-yo].
Long ago, in a certain country, there lived a handsome and wise king.
[Geu] [im-geum-nim-eun] [mo-deun] [baek-seong-deul-e-ge] [jon-gyeong-eul] [ba-da-sseo-ji-man], [i-sang-han] [bi-mil-i] [i-sseo-sseo-yo].
He was respected by all his people, but he had a strange secret.
[Geu] [bi-mil-eun] [ba-ro], [im-geum-nim-ui] [gwi-ga] [dang-na-gwi] [gwi-cheo-reom] [gil-da-neun] [geos-i-eo-sseo-yo].
The secret was that the king’s ears were long like a donkey’s.
[Im-geum-nim-eun] [neul] [gin] [wang-gwan-eul] [sseo-seo] [gwi-reul] [ga-ri-go] [da-nyeo-sseo-yo].
He always wore a tall crown to hide his ears.
[Geu-reo-deon] [eo-neu] [nal], [im-geum-nim-eun] [meo-ri-reul] [kka-kki] [wi-hae] [i-bal-sa-reul] [bul-leo-sseo-yo].
One day, the king called a barber to cut his hair.
[I-bal-sa-neun] [wang-ui] [gwi-reul] [bo-go] [neo-mu] [nol-lat-ji-man] [a-mu] [mal-do] [ha-ji] [mot-hae-sseo-yo].
The barber was shocked by the king’s ears, but couldn’t say a word.
[Im-geum-nim-eun] “[i-geon] [guk-ga-ui] [bi-mil-i-da]. [mal-ha-myeon] [mog-i] [na-ra-gal] [geo-si-da]”[ra-go] [hae-sseo-yo].
The king said, “This is a national secret. If you speak of it, you’ll lose
your head.”
[I-bal-sa-neun] [bi-mil-eul] [ji-ki-ryeo] [haet-ji-man], [si-gan-i] [ji-nal-su-rok] [dap-dap-ham-eul] [neu-kkyeo-sseo-yo].
The barber tried to keep the secret, but the pressure grew heavier each day.
[Gyeol-guk] [geu-neun] [sup-eu-ro] [ga-seo] [ttang-e] [gu-meong-eul] [pa-go] [oe-chyeo-sseo-yo].
Eventually, he went into the forest, dug a hole in the ground, and shouted.
“임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀!”
“[Im-geum-nim] [gwi-neun] [dang-na-gwi] [gwi]!”
“The king’s ears are donkey ears!”
[Geu-neun] [oe-chi-go] [na-seo-ya] [sog-i] [hu-ryeon-hae-jyeot-go], [jib-eu-ro] [do-ra-ga-sseo-yo].
After shouting, he finally felt relieved and returned home.
[Geu-reon-de] [eol-ma] [dwi], [geu-ga] [oe-chin] [ttang-e-seo] [gal-dae-ga] [ja-ra-na-gi] [si-jak-hae-sseo-yo].
But soon after, reeds began to grow where he had shouted.
[Ba-ram-i] [bul-myeon] [gal-dae-neun] “[Im-geum-nim] [gwi-neun] [dang-na-gwi] [gwi]~” [ha-go] [sok-sag-yeo-sseo-yo].
When the wind blew, the reeds whispered, “The king’s ears are donkey ears~.”
[So-mun-eun] [sun-shik-gan-e] [on] [na-ra-e] [peo-jyeot-go], [im-geum-nim-do] [geu-sa-sir-eul] [al-ge] [doe-eo-sseo-yo].
The rumor spread quickly across the kingdom, and the king soon found out.
[Cheo-eum-en] [hwa-ga] [nat-ji-man], [in-ae] [u-seu-myeo] “[i-je-neun] [sum-gi-ji] [an-get-da]”[ra-go] [mal-hae-sseo-yo].
At first, he was angry, but then he laughed and said, “I won’t hide it
anymore.”
[Geu] [hu-ro] [im-geum-nim-eun] [ja-sin-ui] [gwi-reul] [dang-dang-hi] [deu-reo-nae-go] [baek-seong-gwa] [so-tong-hae-sseo-yo].
From then on, the king revealed his ears proudly and communicated openly
with his people.
[I] [i-ya-gi-neun] [bi-mil-eul] [eok-nu-reu-ji] [mal-go] [sol-jik-hae-ji-neun] [geo-si] [jung-yo-ha-da-nun] [gyo-hun-eul] [jeon-hae-jwo-yo].
This story teaches us that it's important to be honest instead of hiding our
truth.
