📖 The Legend of the Green Frog

(청개구리의 전설)

옛날 옛적에 말을 전혀 듣지 않는 청개구리가 살고 있었어요.

Long ago, there lived a green frog who never listened to anyone.

어머니 개구리는 청개구리의 고집 때문에 늘 걱정이 많았어요.

Mother frog was always worried because of her son’s stubbornness.

무엇을 시키면 청개구리는 꼭 반대로 했어요.
[Mu-eo-seul] [si-ki-myeon] [cheong-gae-gu-ri-neun] [kkok] [ban-dae-ro] [hae-sseo-yo].
Whenever she told him to do something, he did the exact opposite.

물을 길러 가라 하면 산으로 가고, 동쪽으로 가라 하면 서쪽으로 갔어요.
[Mu-reul] [gil-leo] [ga-ra] [ha-myeon] [san-eu-ro] [ga-go], [dong-jjok-eu-ro] [ga-ra] [ha-myeon] [seo-jjok-eu-ro] [ga-sseo-yo].
If told to fetch water, he went to the mountains; if told to go east, he went west.

어머니 개구리는 속상했지만, 시간이 지나도 청개구리는 변하지 않았어요.

Mother frog was upset, but even as time passed, he didn’t change.

어느 날, 어머니 개구리는 병이 들고 말았어요.

One day, Mother frog became seriously ill.

죽음을 앞두고 어머니는 무덤을 산이 아닌 강가에 만들어 달라고 했어요.

Facing death, she asked her son to bury her on a river instead of the mountain.

이번에도 청개구리는 반대로 할까 걱정이 되어 일부러 그렇게 말한 거예요.

She said this on purpose, fearing he would do the opposite again.

하지만 어머니가 돌아가시자 청개구리는 처음으로 말을 따랐어요.
[Ha-ji-man] [eo-meon-i-ga] [do-ra-ga-shi-ja] [cheong-gae-gu-ri-neun] [cheo-eum-eu-ro] [mal-eul] [tta-ra-sseo-yo].
But when his mother passed away, the green frog listened for the first time.

그는 어머니의 뜻대로 산이 아니라 강가에 무덤을 만들었어요.
[Geu-neun] [eo-meon-i-ui] [tteus-dae-ro] [san-i] [a-ni-ra] [gang-ga-e] [mu-deom-eul] [man-deu-reo-sseo-yo].
He buried her by the river instead of the mountain, just as she had asked.

그 후 매번 비가 올 때마다 청개구리는 무덤이 떠내려갈까 봐 슬피 울었어요.

Since then, whenever it rains, he cries sadly, afraid the grave will be washed away.

그래서 지금도 비가 오는 날이면 개구리들이 운다고 해요.

That is why, even today, people say frogs cry on rainy days.
