📖 The Tale of the Turtle and the Rabbit
(별주부전)
옛날 옛적에 동해 용궁에 사는 용왕이 심한 병에 걸렸어요.

Long ago, the Dragon King who lived in the East Sea Palace fell seriously
ill.
용왕은 약으로 토끼의 간을 먹어야 병이 낫는다고 들었어요.
[Yong-wang-eun] [yag-eu-ro] [To-kki-ui] [gan-eul] [meo-geo-ya] [byeong-i] [nat-neun-da-go] [deu-reo-sseo-yo].
The Dragon King heard that eating a rabbit’s liver would cure his illness.
그래서 충직한 거북이에게 토끼를 데려오라고 명령했어요.
[Geu-rae-seo] [chung-jik-han] [geo-bu-gi-e-ge] [to-kki-reul] [de-ryeo-o-ra-go] [myeong-ryeong-hae-sseo-yo].
So he ordered his loyal turtle to bring him a rabbit.
거북이는 땅 위로 올라가 숲속에서 재빠른 토끼를 만났어요.

The turtle went up to the land and met a quick-witted rabbit in the forest.
거북이는 토끼에게 용궁을 구경시키겠다며 꾀었어요.

The turtle lured the rabbit by saying he would show him the Dragon Palace.
토끼는 호기심에 이끌려 거북이의 등에 올라탔어요.

The rabbit, curious, climbed onto the turtle’s back.
두 동물은 바다를 지나 깊은 용궁에 도착했어요.

The two animals passed through the sea and arrived at the deep Dragon
Palace.
용왕은 토끼를 보자마자 간을 달라고 했어요.

As soon as the Dragon King saw the rabbit, he asked for his liver.
토끼는 당황했지만 침착하게 생각했어요.

The rabbit was startled but thought quickly.
“제 간은 집에 두고 와서 지금은 없어요,”라고 말했어요.
“[Je] [gan-eun] [ji-be] [du-go] [wa-seo] [ji-geum-eun] [eop-seo-yo],”[ra-go] [mal-hae-sseo-yo].
“I left my liver at home, so I don't have it now,” he said.
토끼는 간을 가지러 다시 다녀 오겠다며 허락을 요청했고, 용왕은 이를 허락했어요.

The rabbit asked for permission, saying he would go get his liver and come back, and the Dragon King granted it.
거북이는 다시 토끼를 등에 태우고 바다 위로 올라왔어요.

The turtle carried the rabbit back across the sea.
하지만 땅에 도착하자 토끼는 거북이를 속였다고 말하며 도망쳤어요.

But when they reached land, the rabbit admitted to tricking the turtle and
ran away.
“간은 몸 안에 있는 걸 몰랐니?”
하며 웃었어요.
“[Gan-eun] [mom] [an-e] [in-neun] [geol] [mol-lat-ni]?” [ha-myeo] [u-seo-sseo-yo].
“Didn’t you know the liver is inside the body?” he laughed.
거북이는 자신이 속았다는 사실에 크게 실망했어요.

The turtle was deeply disappointed that he had been fooled.
하지만 용왕은 토끼의 지혜를 인정하고 다른 치료법을 찾기로 했어요.

But the Dragon King admired the rabbit’s cleverness and decided to find
another cure.
