📖 The Tale of Princess Bari

(바리데기)

옛날 옛적에 오랜 세월 동안 자식이 없던 왕과 왕비가 살고 있었어요.

 Long ago, a king and queen who had no children for many years lived together.

마침내 그들은 일곱째 아이로 딸을 낳았지만, 왕은 실망했어요.
[Ma-chim-nae] [geu-deu-reun] [il-gop-jjae] [a-i-ro] [ttal-eul] [na-at-ji-man], [wang-eun] [sil-mang-hae-sseo-yo].
 At last, they had their seventh child, a daughter, but the king was disappointed.

왕은 나라의 대를 이을 아들을 원했기에 딸을 버리기로 했어요.
[Wang-eun] [na-ra-ui] [dae-reul] [i-eul] [a-deul-eul] [won-haet-gie] [ttal-eul] [beo-ri-gi-ro] [hae-sseo-yo].
 He wanted a son to inherit the throne, so he decided to abandon the daughter.

그 딸은 바리데기라 이름 붙여졌고, 산속에 버려졌어요.
[Geu] [ttal-eun] [Ba-ri-de-gi-ra] [i-reum] [but-yeo-jyeot-go], [san-so-ke] [beo-ryeo-jyeo-sseo-yo].
 The daughter was named Bari-degi, meaning “abandoned one,” and left in the mountains.

하지만 바리는 산신령의 도움으로 살아남아 자라났어요.
[Ha-ji-man] [Ba-ri-neun] [san-sin-ryeong-ui] [do-um-eu-ro] [sa-ra-na-ma] [ja-ra-nat-seo-yo].
 But Bari survived and grew up with the help of a mountain spirit.

시간이 흘러 왕이 병에 걸려 죽을 위기에 처하게 되었어요.
[Si-gan-i] [heul-leo] [wang-i] [byeong-e] [geol-lyeo] [jug-eul] [wi-gie] [cheo-ha-ge] [doe-eo-sseo-yo].
 Time passed, and the king became gravely ill and neared death.

신하들은 왕을 살릴 약이 저승에 있다고 전했어요.
[Sin-ha-deul-eun] [wang-eul] [sal-lil] [ya-gi] [jeo-seung-e] [it-da-go] [jeon-hae-sseo-yo].
 The ministers said that a cure existed in the realm of the dead.

왕과 왕비는 모든 자식에게 저승으로 가서 약을 구해오라 명령했지만 아무도 가지 않았어요.
[Wang-gwa] [wang-bi-neun] [mo-deun] [ja-sik-e-ge] [jeo-seung-eu-ro] [ga-seo] [yag-eul] [gu-hae-o-ra] [myeong-ryeong-haet-ji-man] [a-mu-do] [ga-ji] [an-a-sseo-yo].
 The king and queen ordered all their children to retrieve the medicine from the underworld, but none agreed to go.

그때 자신에게 버려진 딸 바리가 궁으로 찾아와 왕 앞에 무릎 꿇었어요.
[Geu-ttae] [ja-sin-e-ke] [beo-ryeo-jin] [ttal] [Bari-ga] [gung-eu-ro] [cha-ja-wa] [wang] [a-pe] [mu-reup] [kkul-heo-sseo-yo].
 Then Bari, the abandoned daughter, came to the palace and knelt before the king.

“비록 저를 버리셨지만, 자식 된 도리로 아버지를 살리고 싶습니다,”라고 했어요.
 “[Bi-rok] [jeo-reul] [beo-ri-shyeot-ji-man], [ja-sik] [doen] [do-ri-ro] [a-beo-ji-reul] [sal-li-go] [sip-seum-ni-da],”[ra-go] [hae-sseo-yo].
 “Though you abandoned me, as your child, I wish to save you,” she said.

바리는 저승으로 향하는 길고 험한 여정을 떠났어요.
[Ba-ri-neun] [jeo-seung-eu-ro] [hyang-ha-neun] [gil-go] [heom-an] [yeo-jeong-eul] [tteo-na-sseo-yo].
 Bari set off on a long and dangerous journey to the underworld.

그녀는 귀신과 괴물, 추위와 배고픔을 모두 이겨냈어요.
[Geu-nyeo-neun] [gwi-sin-gwa] [goe-mul], [chu-wi-wa] [bae-go-peum-eul] [mo-du] [i-gyeo-nae-sseo-yo].
 She overcame ghosts, monsters, cold, and hunger.

바리는 마침내 저승의 꽃밭에서 생명의 약수를 얻었어요.
[Ba-ri-neun] [ma-chim-nae] [jeo-seung-ui] [kkot-bat-e-seo] [saeng-myeong-ui] [yak-su-reul] [eod-eo-sseo-yo].
 Finally, Bari found the water of life in the flower fields of the underworld.

그녀는 약을 들고 다시 세상으로 돌아왔어요.
[Geun-yeo-neun] [yag-eul] [deul-go] [da-si] [se-sang-eu-ro] [do-ra-wat-seo-yo].
 She returned to the world with the medicine.

왕은 약을 마시고 건강을 되찾았어요.
[Wang-eun] [yag-eul] [ma-si-go] [geon-gang-eul] [do-e-cha-jat-seo-yo].
 The king drank the potion and recovered his health.

왕은 바리에게 무릎 꿇고 눈물로 용서를 구했어요.
[Wang-eun] [Ba-ri-e-ge] [mu-reup] [kkul-ko] [nun-mul-lo] [yong-seo-reul] [gu-hae-sseo-yo].
 He knelt before Bari and tearfully begged for forgiveness.

하지만 바리는 원망하지 않고 모든 것을 용서했어요.
[Ha-ji-man] [Ba-ri-neun] [won-mang-ha-ji] [an-ko] [mo-deun] [geo-seul] [yong-seo-hae-sseo-yo].
 But Bari held no grudge and forgave everything.

그녀는 이후 사람들의 영혼을 인도하는 신이 되었다고 해요.
[Geu-nyeo-neun] [i-hu] [sa-ramdeul-ui yeonghon-eul indo-haneun sin-i doeeotdago haeyo.
 It is said that she later became a goddess guiding souls to the afterlife.

바리데기는 희생과 용서, 사랑을 상징하는 존재로 기억되고 있어요.
[Ba-ri-de-gi-neun] [hui-saeng-gwa] [yong-seo], [sa-rang-eul] [sang-jing-ha-neun] [jon-jae-ro] [gi-eok-doe-go] [i-sseo-yo].
 Baridegi is remembered as a symbol of sacrifice, forgiveness, and love.
