📖 The Tale of Janghwa and Hongryeon
(장화홍련전)
옛날 옛적에 장화와 홍련이라는 아름답고 착한 자매가 살고 있었어요.

Long ago, there lived two beautiful and kind sisters named Janghwa and
Hongryeon.
두 자매는 어머니를 일찍 여의고, 아버지와 함께 살았어요.

The sisters lost their mother early and lived with their father.

One day, their father married a new woman.

Janghwa came of age to be married, but the stepmother tried to prevent it.
어느 날, 새어머니는 장화가 임신했다고 거짓말을 퍼뜨렸어요.

One day, the stepmother spread a lie that Janghwa was pregnant.

People criticized Janghwa, and even her father stopped believing her.
결국 장화는 억울한 마음에 연못에 몸을 던져 목숨을 잃었어요.

In the end, heartbroken, Janghwa threw herself into a pond and lost her
life.
홍련은 언니의 죽음을 슬퍼하며 더 힘들게 살았어요.

Hongryeon mourned her sister’s death and lived even more painfully.
하지만 새어머니는 홍련도 미워했고, 결국 홍련도 같은 운명을 맞았어요.

But the stepmother also hated Hongryeon, and in the end, Hongryeon met the
same fate.
그 후로 마을에 두 자매의 원혼이 나타나기 시작했어요.

After that, the sisters’ spirits began appearing in the village.
귀신이 된 장화와 홍련은 억울함을 알리고자 사람들 앞에 나타났어요.

As ghosts, Janghwa and Hongryeon appeared to reveal the injustice done to

관리는 이 사건을 조사했고, 결국 새어머니의 죄가 밝혀졌어요.

An official investigated the case, and the stepmother’s crimes were

The father realized his mistake and deeply regretted losing his daughters.

Later, it is said the two sisters were reborn and lived happily.
