📖 The Tale of Shim Cheong

(심청전)

옛날 옛적에 심봉사라는 눈먼 아버지와 그의 딸 심청이가 살고 있었어요.

Long ago, a blind man named Sim Bongsa lived with his daughter, Shim Cheong.

심청이는 어린 나이에 어머니를 잃고, 아버지를 극진히 모시며 자랐어요.

하지만 너무 가난해서 그 약속을 지킬 수 없었어요.

But they were too poor to fulfill that promise.

그 사실을 알게 된 심청이는 아버지를 위해 인당수에 몸을 바치기로 결심했어요.

A merchant was looking for a maiden to offer to the sea god, and Shim Cheong volunteered.

The merchant gave 300 sacks of rice to Sim Bongsa.

심청이는 배를 타고 인당수로 향했고, 눈물 속에서 바다에 몸을 던졌어요.

But in the sea dragon king’s palace, she miraculously regained her life and sight.

용왕은 그녀를 육지로 돌려보냈고, 심청이는 한 나라의 왕비가 되었어요.

The dragon king sent her back to land, where she became the queen of a kingdom.

왕비가 된 후에도 아버지를 잊지 않고 찾았어요.

Even after becoming queen, she never forgot her father and searched for him.

심봉사는 어느 날 잔치에 초대되어 궁에 들어갔어요.

One day, Sim Bongsa was invited to the palace.

그 자리에서 딸 심청이를 보고 놀라 감격의 눈물을 흘렸어요.

At that very moment, like a miracle, his eyes opened.
