📖 The Brother and Sister Who Became the Sun and the Moon

옛날 옛적에 산골 마을에 착하고 똑똑한 오누이가 살고 있었어요.

Long ago, in a mountain village, there lived a kind and smart brother and sister.

오누이는 매일 서로 도우며 행복하게 살았어요.

The siblings helped each other every day and lived happily.

어느 날, 엄마는 시장에 가야 한다며 오누이에게 문을 꼭 잠그라고 했어요.

One day, their mother had to go to the market and told them to lock the door tightly.

엄마는 “낯선 사람이 와도 절대 문을 열어주면 안돼”라고 말했어요.

She said, “Even if a stranger comes, don’t ever open the door.”

오누이는 고개를 끄덕이며 엄마 말을 잘 기억했어요.

The siblings nodded and remembered their mother’s words well.

그런데 저녁 무렵, 밖에서 엄마 목소리처럼 들리는 소리가 들렸어요.

But around dusk, they heard a voice outside that sounded like their mother.

“얘들아, 엄마야. 문 좀 열어다오.”하는 부드러운 목소리였어요.
“[Yae-deu-ra], [eom-ma-ya]. [Mun] [jom] [yeo-reo-da-o].” [ha-neun] [bu-deu-reo-un] [mok-so-ri-yie-o-sseo-yo].
“Children, it’s mom. Please open the door,” came a gentle voice.

하지만 오누이는 뭔가 이상하다고 느꼈어요.
[Ha-ji-man] [o-nui-neun] [mwon-ga] [i-sang-ha-da-go] [neu-kkyeo-sseo-yo].
But the siblings felt something was strange.

엄마 목소리 같았지만 뭔가 어두운 기운이 느껴졌거든요.
[Eom-ma] [mok-so-ri] [gat-at-ji-man] [mwon-ga] [eo-du-un] [gi-un-i] [neu-kkyeo-jyeot-geo-deun-yo].
It sounded like their mom, but there was a dark feeling to it.

그들은 “엄마, 손을 보여 주세요!”라고 말했어요.
[Geu-deu-reun] ‘[eom-ma], [son-eul] [bo-yeo] [ju-se-yo]!’[ra-go] [mal-hae-sseo-yo].
They said, “Mom, show us your hand!”

문틈 사이로 보인 건 무서운 호랑이 발이었어요.
[Mun-teum] [sa-i-ro] [bo-in] [geon] [mu-seo-un] [ho-rang-i] [ba-ri-yeo-sseo-yo].
What they saw through the crack in the door was a scary tiger’s paw.

오누이는 깜짝 놀라서 집 뒤편으로 달려 도망쳤어요.
[O-nui-neun] [kkam-jjag] [nol-la-seo] [jip] [dwi-pyeon-euro] [dal-lyeo] [do-mang-chyeo-sseo-yo].
The siblings were terrified and ran toward the back of the house.

호랑이는 으르렁거리며 그들을 쫓아갔어요.
[Ho-rang-i-neun] [eu-reu-reong-geo-ri-myeo] [geu-deu-reul] [jjot-a-ga-sseo-yo].
The tiger growled and chased after them.

오누이는 산으로 달려 올라가며 하늘을 향해 기도했어요.
[O-nui-neun] [san-euro] [dal-lyeo] [ol-la-ga-myeo] [ha-neul-eul] [hyang-hae] [gi-do-hae-sseo-yo].
They ran up the mountain and prayed toward the sky.

“하늘님, 제발 우리를 구해주세요!”
“[Ha-neul-nim], [je-bal] [u-ri-reul] [gu-hae-ju-se-yo]!”
“Dear Sky God, please save us!”

그러자 하늘에서 튼튼한 밧줄이 내려왔어요.
[Geu-reo-ja] [ha-neul-e-seo] [teun-teun-han] [bat-jul-i] [nae-ryeo-wa-sseo-yo].
Then, a strong rope came down from the sky.

오누이는 그 밧줄을 잡고 하늘로 올라갔어요.
[O-nui-neun] [geu] [bat-jul-eul] [jap-go] [han-eul-lo] [ol-la-ga-sseo-yo].
The siblings grabbed the rope and climbed into the sky.

호랑이도 그 밧줄을 타고 올라가려 했지만, 밧줄이 끊어졌어요.
[Ho-rang-i-do] [geu] [bat-jul-eul] [ta-go] [ol-la-ga-ryeo] [haet-ji-man], [bat-jul-i] [kkeun-eo-jyeo-sseo-yo].
The tiger tried to follow, but the rope broke.

호랑이는 땅으로 떨어져 사라졌어요.
[Ho-rang-i-neun] [ttang-eu-ro] [tteo-reo-jyeo] [sa-ra-jyeo-sseo-yo].
The tiger fell to the ground and disappeared.

하늘에 올라간 오누이는 신의 뜻에 따라 해와 달이 되었어요.
[Ha-neul-e] [ol-la-gan] [o-nui-neun] [sin-ui] [tteus-e ttara] [hae-wa] [dal-i] [doe-eo-sseo-yo].
The siblings who reached the sky became the sun and the moon by the will of the gods.

누나는 밝고 따뜻한 해가 되었고,
[Nu-na-neun] [bal-ggo] [tta-tteut-han] [hae-ga] [doe-eot-go],
The sister became the bright, warm sun,

동생은 조용하고 부드러운 달이 되었어요.
[Dong-saeng-eun] [jo-yong-ha-go] [bu-deu-reo-un] [dal-i] [doe-eo-sseo-yo].
And the brother became the calm and gentle moon.

그래서 해는 낮에 떠서 세상을 비추고, 달은 밤에 떠서 오누이를 기억하게 해요.
[Geu-rae-seo] [hae-neun] [na-je] [tteo-seo] [se-sang-eul] [bi-chu-go], [da-reun] [bam-e] [tteo-seo] [o-nui-reul] [gi-eok-ha-ge] [hae-yo].
That’s why the sun shines during the day and the moon glows at night to remember the siblings.
