🟩 Expanding Korean Sentences with Time, Place, and Reason Expressions

🟒 1. Introduction

To make Korean sentences more descriptive and natural, we can add time, place, and reason expressions. These act like adverbials in English and answer:

  • μ–Έμ œ When? → Time
  • μ–΄λ””μ„œ Where? → Place
  • μ™œ Why? → Reason

🟒 2. Time Expressions (When)

Patterns

  1. Noun + 에 → time point
  2. Time adverbs
  3. Clause + λ•Œ → when something happens

Examples

  • 아침에 μš΄λ™ν–ˆμ–΄μš”. = I exercised in the morning.
  • μ–΄μ œ 친ꡬλ₯Ό λ§Œλ‚¬μ–΄μš”. = I met a friend yesterday.
  • λ°₯을 먹을 λ•Œ TVλ₯Ό λ΄μš”. = I watch TV when I eat.

Notes

  • Use -에 with specific time points like "3μ‹œμ—", "주말에"
  • Use -λ•Œ to express a time period within which an action happens

🟒 3. Place Expressions (Where)

Patterns

  1. Location + μ—μ„œ → where an action takes place
  2. Location + 에 → for existence or movement

Examples

  • μ§‘μ—μ„œ μˆ™μ œν–ˆμ–΄μš”. = I did homework at home.
  • νšŒμ‚¬μ— μžˆμ–΄μš”. = I am at work.
  • μš°λ¦¬λŠ” 곡원에 κ°”μ–΄μš”. = We went to the park.

Notes

  • -μ—μ„œ is used with action verbs
  • -에 is used with μžˆλ‹€/μ—†λ‹€ or go/come

🟒 4. Reason Expressions (Why)

Patterns

  • -μ•„μ„œ/μ–΄μ„œ = because
  • -κΈ° λ•Œλ¬Έμ— = formal “because”
  • μ™œλƒν•˜λ©΄... -κΈ° λ•Œλ¬Έμ΄λ‹€ = “The reason is…”
  • -λ‹ˆκΉŒ = because, emotional tone

Examples

  • λ°°κ³ νŒŒμ„œ λ¨Ήμ—ˆμ–΄μš”. = I ate because I was hungry.
  • λŠ¦μ—ˆκΈ° λ•Œλ¬Έμ— μ£„μ†‘ν•΄μš”. = I’m sorry because I’m late.
  • μ™œλƒν•˜λ©΄ μ•„νŒŒμ„œ λͺ» κ°”μ–΄μš”. = Because I was sick, I couldn't go.
  • μ‹œκ°„μ΄ μ—†μœΌλ‹ˆκΉŒ λ‚˜μ€‘μ— ν•΄μš”. = Let’s do it later because I don’t have time.

🟒 5. Putting It All Together

Start with a simple sentence:

  • λ‚˜λŠ” κ°„λ‹€. = I go.

Add time:

  • μ–΄μ œ λ‚˜λŠ” κ°„λ‹€. = I went yesterday.

Add place:

  • μ–΄μ œ 학ꡐ에 κ°”λ‹€. = I went to school yesterday.

Add reason:

  • κ³΅λΆ€ν•˜κΈ° μœ„ν•΄μ„œ μ–΄μ œ 학ꡐ에 κ°”λ‹€. = I went to school yesterday to study.
