Learn Hangul 7: Double Consonants — Luca and Hani Find Strong Sounds

Intro

Luca and Hani wander into a canyon where echoes bounce loudly off the rocks.

Omi: “Hear that? These are double consonants! They make stronger, sharper sounds.”

Luca: “Like bold letters!”

Hani: “I want to say them loudly!”


7.1 What Are Double Consonants?


  • Double consonants are written by repeating certain consonants.
  • They make tense, stronger sounds.

Examples:

  • [kk]
  • [tt]
  • [pp]
  • [ss]
  • [jj]

7.2 Double Consonant Sounds

  • (kk) — Strong ‘k’ sound, like in "spark"
  • (tt) — Strong ‘t’ sound, like in "stutter"
  • (pp) — Strong ‘p’ sound, like in "pepper"
  • (ss) — Strong ‘s’ sound, like in "hiss!"
  • (jj) — Strong ‘j’ sound, like a firm “j”

7.3 Practice Words with Double Consonants

Omi claps his hands, and words appear on stone tablets:

  • [ppang] — bread”
  • 짜요 [jja-yo] — salty”
  • [ssal] — rice”
  • 까치 [kkachi] — magpie”
  • [kkool] — honey”
  • [ttuk] — rice cake”
  • 싸요 [ssa-yo] — cover, cheap”
  • 아빠 [a-ppa] — dad”

Luca and Hani say the words loud and strong!
