Learn Hangul 6: Compound Vowels — Luca and Hani Explore Magical Combinations

Intro

Luca and Hani walk into a garden full of rainbow vines. Each vine twists and merges, just like vowels do!

Omi: “These are compound vowels! Two simple vowels combine to make new sounds.”

Luca: “Like magic spells mixing together!”

Hani: “Let’s learn how they sound!”

6.1 What Are Compound Vowels?

  • Compound vowels are formed by combining two simple vowels.
  • They make blended sounds.

Examples:

  • (ya) + (i) = (yae) [yae]
  • (o) + (a) = (wa) [wa]

6.2 Key Compound Vowels and Their Sounds

  • [wa] — like “wand”
  • [wae] — like “wedge”
  • [weh] — similar to “way”
  • [wo] — like “wonder”
  • [weh] — like “wedding”
  • [wee] — like “week”
  • [ui] — unique sound (start with 'eu' and slide to 'ee')

6.3 Practice with Words

Omi shows flower petals with words:

  • 과자 [gwa-ja] — snack”
  • [wae] — why”
  • 외국 [weh-guk] — foreign country”
  • 우유 [u-yu] — milk”
  • 화장 [hwa-jang] — make-up”
