Learn Hangul 5: Learning Batchim — Luca and Hani Discover Final Consonants
Intro
Luca and Hani continue their adventure and
follow Omi into a glowing cave. On the walls, they see letters sitting below
other letters.
Omi: “These are called batchim — final
consonants that sit at the bottom of a syllable!”
Luca: “They look like tiny seats for the
consonants!”
Hani: “Let’s learn to use them!”
5.1 What is Batchim?
- Batchim is the final consonant in a syllable.
- It changes how the syllable sounds and makes words more
complete.
Examples:
- “받 (bat) — The ㄷ sits at the bottom.”
- “먹 (meok) — The ㄱ sits below ㅓ.”
5.2 Common Batchim Sounds
- ㄱ (k), ㄴ (n), ㄷ
(t), ㄹ (l), ㅁ (m), ㅂ (p), ㅇ (ng) are common final sounds.
Examples:
- “산 [san] — mountain”
- “집 [jip] — house”
- “강 [gang] — river”
5.3 Double Batchim
- Some batchim have two consonants!
Examples:
- “앉다 (anj-da) — sit”
- “읽다 (ik-da) — read”
- “않다 (an-da) — not do”
- “앓다 (alh-da) — being sick”
5.4 Practice Reading Words with Batchim
Omi points to words on glowing stones:
- “밥 (bap) [bap] — rice”
- “닭 (dak) [dak] — chicken”
- “숲 (sup) [sup] — forest”
Luca and Hani practice reading them out loud.
