Learn Hangul 5: Learning Batchim — Luca and Hani Discover Final Consonants

Intro

Luca and Hani continue their adventure and follow Omi into a glowing cave. On the walls, they see letters sitting below other letters.

Omi: “These are called batchim — final consonants that sit at the bottom of a syllable!”

Luca: “They look like tiny seats for the consonants!”

Hani: “Let’s learn to use them!”


5.1 What is Batchim?

  • Batchim is the final consonant in a syllable.
  • It changes how the syllable sounds and makes words more complete.

Examples:

  • (bat) — The sits at the bottom.”
  • (meok) — The sits below .”



5.2 Common Batchim Sounds

  • (k), (n), (t), (l), (m), (p), (ng) are common final sounds.

Examples:

  • [san] — mountain”
  • [jip] — house”
  • [gang] — river”



5.3 Double Batchim

  • Some batchim have two consonants!

Examples:

  • 앉다 (anj-da) — sit”
  • 읽다 (ik-da) — read”
  • 않다 (an-da) — not do”
  • 앓다 (alh-da) — being sick”



5.4 Practice Reading Words with Batchim

Omi points to words on glowing stones:

  • (bap) [bap] — rice”
  • (dak) [dak] — chicken”
  • (sup) [sup] — forest”


Luca and Hani practice reading them out loud.
