Learn Hangul 4: Putting Consonants and Vowels Together — Luca and Hani’s First Words
Intro
Luca and Hani sit by the riverbank with
Omi. The shimmering letters begin to dance and pair up.
Omi: “Now that you know vowels and
consonants, it’s time to make real words!”
Luca: “Wow! So letters are like friends
holding hands!”
Hani: “Let’s learn how they hold hands and
make sounds!”
4.1 The Basic Structure (Consonant +
Vowel = Syllable)
- Learn the simple rule: A consonant and a vowel make one block!
Examples:
- “ㄱ (g) + ㅏ (a)
= 가 [ga]”
- “ㅂ (b) + ㅗ (o)
= 보 [bo]”
- “ㅈ (j) + ㅜ (u)
= 주 [ju]”
4.2 Vertical Vowel Blocks
- Vertical vowels (ㅏ, ㅓ, ㅑ, ㅕ) sit
beside consonants
Examples:
- “ㄴ(n) + ㅏ(a) = 나 [na]”
- “ㅁ(m) + ㅑ(ya) = 먀 [mya]”
4.3 Horizontal Vowel Blocks
- Horizontal vowels (ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅛ, ㅠ) go
below consonants
Examples:
- “ㄱ(g) + ㅗ(o) = 고 [go]”
- “ㅅ(s) + ㅜ(u) = 수 [su]”
4.4 Double Consonants in Words
- Add strong double consonants for stronger sounds!
Examples:
- “ㄲ(kk) + ㅜ(u) = 꾸 [kku]”
- “ㅆ(ss) + ㅣ(i) = 씨 [ssi]”
4.5 Practice Time: Building Simple Words
- Omi challenges Luca and Hani to read words:
- “가방 [ga-bang] (bag)”
- “하늘 [ha-neul] (sky)”
- “우유 [u-yu] (milk)”
Luca and Hani cheer as they read their
first words!
