Learn Hangul 4: Putting Consonants and Vowels Together — Luca and Hani’s First Words

Intro

Luca and Hani sit by the riverbank with Omi. The shimmering letters begin to dance and pair up.

Omi: “Now that you know vowels and consonants, it’s time to make real words!”

Luca: “Wow! So letters are like friends holding hands!”

Hani: “Let’s learn how they hold hands and make sounds!”




4.1 The Basic Structure (Consonant + Vowel = Syllable)

  • Learn the simple rule: A consonant and a vowel make one block!

Examples:

  • (g) + (a) = [ga]”
  • (b) + (o) = [bo]”
  • (j) + (u) = [ju]”


4.2 Vertical Vowel Blocks

  • Vertical vowels (, , , ) sit beside consonants

Examples:

  • ㄴ(n) + ㅏ(a) = [na]”
  • ㅁ(m) + ㅑ(ya) = [mya]”



4.3 Horizontal Vowel Blocks

  • Horizontal vowels (, , , ) go below consonants

Examples:

  • ㄱ(g) + ㅗ(o) = [go]”
  • ㅅ(s) + ㅜ(u) = [su]”



4.4 Double Consonants in Words

  • Add strong double consonants for stronger sounds!

Examples:

  • ㄲ(kk) + ㅜ(u) = [kku]”
  • ㅆ(ss) + ㅣ(i) = [ssi]”



4.5 Practice Time: Building Simple Words

  • Omi challenges Luca and Hani to read words:
  • 가방 [ga-bang] (bag)”
  • 하늘 [ha-neul] (sky)”
  • 우유 [u-yu] (milk)”
