Learn Hangul 2: The Secret of Basic Vowels — Luca and Hani’s First Lesson

Intro

Luca and Hani wake up in a beautiful forest filled with glowing letters. A wise old owl named Omi appears.

Omi: “To master Hangul, you must first learn the basic vowels. They are the keys to making sounds!”

Luca and Hani nod eagerly and follow Omi into a magical clearing.




2.1 The Straight Lines: (a), (ya), (eo), (yeo)

  • Practice saying each vowel sound aloud (a, ya, eo, yeo)
  • Trace them in your notebook with bright colors

Examples:

  • (a) like in 아기 [a-gi] (baby)!”
  • (ya) like in 야채 [ya-chae] (vegetables)!”
  • (eo) like in 어머니 [eo-meo-ni] (mother)!”
  • (yeo) like in 여자 [yeo-ja] (woman)!”



2.2 The Round Vowels: (o), (yo), (u), (yu)

  • Listen and repeat each vowel
  • Draw round bubbles around each vowel for fun!

Examples:

  • (o) like in 고래 [go-rae] (whale)!”
  • (yo) like in 요리 [yo-ri] (cooking)!”
  • (u) like in 우유 [u-yu] (milk)!”
  • (yu) like in 휴지 [hyu-ji] (tissue)!”



2.3 The Special Vowels: (eu), (i)

  • Omi explains: “These vowels stand on their own and are just as important.”
  • Practice writing and speaking them

Examples:

  • (eu) like in 으악! [eu-ak] (Ahh!)!”
  • (i) like in 이빨 [i-ppal] (tooth)!”



2.4 Magic Word Building

  • Combine vowels and consonants to make new words

Examples:

  • + =  [an] (inside) ”
  • + =  [gok] (song)”
  • + =  [ul] (cry) ”
