Korean vowels and pronunciation
Korean vowels (Hangul vowels)
consist of 10 basic vowels and 11 diphthongs (complex vowels).
The basic vowels include: a (ㅏ), ya (ㅑ), eo (ㅓ),
yeo (ㅕ), o (ㅗ), yo (ㅛ), u (ㅜ), yu (ㅠ), eu
(ㅡ), i (ㅣ).
The diphthongs are formed by
combining basic vowels, such as ae (ㅐ), yae (ㅒ), e (ㅔ), ye (ㅖ), wa
(ㅘ), wae (ㅙ), oe (ㅚ), wo (ㅝ), we (ㅞ),
wi (ㅟ), ui (ㅢ). These sounds allow for more variations in pronunciation.
Korean vowels can be combined with
consonants to create syllables. The vowels are classified by their shape and
pronunciation, making them easy to learn. Additionally, they follow a logical
structure, where horizontal vowels (ㅡ, ㅗ, ㅜ) are written
under consonants and vertical vowels (ㅏ, ㅑ, ㅓ, ㅕ, ㅣ) are written beside consonants. This
systematic approach makes Hangul one of the most scientifically designed
writing systems in the world.
